Miss Photogenic

To say things have been busy for Caloundra's Rachael Gorry these past couple of months is something of an understatement.

The whirlwind of racing car drivers, casinos, photo shoots and cheering crowds that whisked her away in October all came after the 18 year old's last minute decision to enter the Caloundra leg of the Bartercard Miss Indy competition.

Coming in with no modelling experience either in front of the camera or on the catwalk, Rachael was chosen as one of 40 Gold Coast bound finalists for the glamorous national model search.

It was a demanding introduction to the world of modelling competitions too, where a few hours sleep could only be snatched before she was joining the group to head off to one of the dozens of functions and appearances crammed into the nine days, certainly a contrast to her day job working at a bank.

But it seems the camera was waiting for her all along after judges awarded her the Miss Photogenic Award, an accolade that came with a trophy, sash and $6500 prize pack that will go towards creating her first portfolio to help her find more modelling work in the future.

Even without the portfolio Rachael has had little problem picking up work.

Staff for Ralph magazine spotted her potential during the Indy week celebrations and ensured they didn't miss the opportunity for a photo shoot before she returned home.

Prior to the competition Rachael had talked about wanting to do a shoot for that very magazine.

Now with her face about to hit news stands in the coming weeks and an appearance in the 2010 Indy Girls calendar also forthcoming she can hardly believe it has all happened so quickly.

"I didn't go down with any high hopes of winning the whole thing and when I got there I realised I probably wasn't ready for that," she said.

"For some reason I actually found walking out in front of big crowd at the casino in my bikini OK.

"The other girls were really supportive of each other and I don't know whether it was because I was comfortable with them but I just gained a lot of confidence over the week.

"I was just stoked to be there but I think winning the Miss Photogenic title at Indy will be quite handy for my profile."
