TELSTRA is expecting more than 44 million SMS and picture messages to be sent Australia-wide this Valentine's Day.

Last Valentine's Day, Telstra saw a 6% increase in text messages.

It also saw a 35% rise in picture messages.

"Every Valentine's Day we see a huge spike in SMS and MMS traffic on our network as customers send cute pictures and declarations of love across Australia," a Telstra spokesman said.

"Many people around the country will be waking up to lovely messages of love and affection on their phones on Thursday."
