Microsoft launched a complete overhaul of its most popular software suite in San Francisco this morning, revealing a new web-like look, the ability to start video chats from your email program, add YouTube videos to essays, and share any documents online with Facebook friends.
Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said Office 15 was an "ambitious" redesign that changed Microsoft Office from programs in a box to net-savvy software using the cloud.
"This is a new generation of Office where Office is a service first," he said. "We'll continue to make Office in traditional ways but the Office we'll talk about and show you today is the first round of Office that has been designed from the get-go for Office to be a service."
Rather than store documents on your computer, Microsoft's newest edition of Word will store letters, essays and more in "the cloud" by default, corporate vice-president Kirk Koenigsbauer said.
