Mendis the star in game one

SRI LANKA off-spinner Ajantha Mendis has bowled himself into the Twenty20 history books ... again.

Mendis recorded the best figures in a Twenty20 international as hosts Sri Lanka hammered Zimbabwe by 82 runs in the opening match of the Twenty20 World Cup.

Recalled to the Sri Lankan Twenty20 line-up for the first time in 10 months, Mendis bamboozled the Zimbabwe batsmen to finish with the incredible figures of 6-8 from four overs in the Group C match in Hambantota.

He bettered his own record figures of 6-16 against Australia in 2011 and the previous best at a Twenty20 World Cup, which was Umar Gul's 5-6 for Pakistan against New Zealand at The Oval in 2009.

Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 4-182 before skittling Zimbabwe for 100 in the 17th over.

South Africa takes on Zimbabwe tonight (11.45pm AEST).

Defending champions and world No.1, England, face Afghanistan tomorrow (11.45pm AEST).

The tournament features 12 teams with the top two from each group of three progressing to the Super Eights before the final on October 7.
