Max Gawn making good progress in injury return

THERE'S good news for Melbourne fans with coach Simon Goodwin declaring star ruckman Max Gawn could be back as soon as round 13.

Gawn has been sidelined since seriously injuring his hamstring against Geelong in round 3, but the coach said the big man could return against the Western Bulldogs.

When asked about Gawn's progress, the coach said he was recovering faster than first expected

"He's tracking extremely well, he's doing a lot of running and conditioning, and in his own words, he's in pretty good shape," Goodwin said at training on Thursday.

And the coach said reports young midfielder Angus Brayshaw was out indefinitely due to multiple concussions were incorrect.

"We're not sure (how long Angus will be out for), but he's tracking extremely well, he's back doing some training and some running, and we'll get him back to his best as soon as we can," Goodwin said.

Speaking ahead of his club's clash with Gold Coast in Alice Springs, Goodwin acknowledged the frustration that came with being a developing club, and the rollercoaster results that accompany that task.

Goodwin said the club was looking forward to travelling to the red centre so they could bounce back from last week's disappointing loss to North Melbourne.

"I know the players were hurting a lot after the weekend and they really want to respond," said Goodwin.

The Melbourne coach also said that he "loves playing in the Northern Territory" and that he "sees it as an advantage" for his side and will give them a home-ground advantage.

Goodwin also said that despite their opponents on the weekend, Gold Coast, being the best centre clearance team in the AFL, the Demons will not try and emphasise a different source for their scores.

"Stoppages is one of the areas where we do feel we can get an advantage ... so we'll keep focusing on that - we won't change our game, or the way we play to counter the opposition."
