MATT Golinski is awake and aware of the tragedy that claimed the lives of his wife and three daughters, his father says.

Keith Golinski said his son was now able to communicate for measured periods and that his lungs were recovering well.

Since communication had been established however, Keith believes that Matt was aware of the fact that his wife and three children had perished in the fire.

"Thankfully we did not have to go into any major detail about what had happened and were simply able to confirm
his understanding of the outcome of the fire," Keith said.

"Obviously Matt is still processing his grief as well as slowly piecing together the events of the past two and a bit
months."

He is still undergoing bouts of surgery and receiving ongoing treatment for his injuries.

Matt sustained horrific burns in a home fire on Boxing Day that killed his wife Rachael and daughters Starlia, Willow and Sage.

His condition has been downgraded from serious to stable, and he has been move from the intensive care unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Matt's recovery comes just days after the establishment of the Plates for Mates fundraiser, which will involve some of the nation's best known chefs.
