Mandy gets graphic

Small Town Girl is Mandy Nolan’s latest exhibition.

Painting since the birth of her daughter Ivy, this mother of five still somehow manages time to pick up a brush between looking after the kids and working as a stand-up comedian.

Small Town Girl is really how I see myself, “ Mandy said. “I was born in a country town in Queensland, then after various stints in the city I found myself here. I think the country has the space for women to really grow into themselves.”

Mandy embraces the feminine in her paintings, depicting whimsical landscapes where women ride bareback through crimson forests; where circus performers tumble alongside performing dogs; pear-shaped women’s bottoms escape flimsy knickers; and the innocence of angels is marred by their imperfect and broken nudity.

Small Town Girl opens at Art Piece Gallery in Mullum on Friday, December 11, at 6pm. All are welcome for a small performance, music and opening drinks.
