Man treated for dog bites after scuffle with police in surf

A 30-YEAR-old Deception Bay man is in hospital with several dog bites and due to face court today following a violent struggle in the surf with police.

Police attended around 9.30pm and it will be alleged a man fled on foot eventually running into the surf at Coolangatta beach.

The man refused repeated requests for him to exit the surf before a police dog and handler entered the water.

 A violent struggle ensued during which time the man, and the police officer, sustained dog bite injuries.

The man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment for several dog bites.

The 39-year-old senior male constable was treated at Tweed Heads Hospital before being released.

The man has been charged with two counts of stealing and one each serious assault police, obstruct and resist police, and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle.
