A MAN injured in a crash between a car and a truck at Tabbimoble last week has died at the Gold Coast Hospital.
Douglas Hyde, 62 of Frenchs Forest, in Sydney's northern suburbs, passed away at the Gold Coast Hospital on Sunday from injuries sustained in the crash last Wednesday.
The crash happened about noon last Wednesday when a northbound truck and the southbound VW Passat that was carrying the man and his wife collided.
The truck pushed the car almost 80m before stopping.
After being trapped for about an hour the man was finally freed from the car and airlifted to Gold Coast hospital in a critical condition.
His wife was taken to Lismore Base hospital suffering spinal injuries.
The driver of the truck, a 41-year-old man from Punchbowl in Sydney was breath-tested at the scene and returned a negative reading.
The crash, south of the New Italy rest stop and in the highway's infamous "tired zone", closed the highway for several hours, forcing traffic to divert at Ballina and Grafton along the Summerland Way and the Bruxner Highway.
Police are still investigating the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.
Anyone with information on the crash who has not already spoken to police should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
