Hostage freed and man arrested after eight-hour siege ends

A MAN has been arrested after a woman was allegedly held hostage in Melbourne for almost eight hours.

The distraught 27-year-old woman was in tears as she emerged from the Ludlow Bar and Dining Room in Southbank just after 5.25am today.

Police alleged the victim was held against her will by the 35-year-old former employee of the restaurant.

The drama began at 9.40pm on Sunday and ended when tactical response officers entered the restaurant and tasered the man after he agreed to free the woman.

Acting Inspector Travis McCarthy said officers believed the man stopped working at the restaurant in the past two weeks.

"He was fairly disgruntled about some employment issues with the restaurant," A/Insp McCarthy said.

"I think it's just a case that she happened to be there at that time when he's gone into the storeroom and as a result she's remained in there with him."

The man is under police guard in a Melbourne hospital.
