Man charged over couple's murder

POLICE are at a loss to explain the suspected murders of a Mt Isa couple in far north Queensland, despite charging a man over their deaths on Saturday.

The bodies of 35-year-old Scott Maitland and 33-year-old Cindy Masonwells have not been found, although police charged a 40-year-old Cairns man with their murders at the weekend.

The man, from Bungalow, is due to face Cairns Magistrates Court yesterday charged with two counts of murder.

It is understood he worked at Machete Motors in Cairns, where the couple's classic 1975 Holden Sandman panel van had been restored.

Officers were at the workshop on Saturday making inquiries.
