Man fined $100 for driving dirty car

ONE Ipswich motorist will be sure to keep his car clean from now on.

Lance Robert Ray Axford, 19, was fined $100 for his car being too muddy on Redbank Plains Rd on 7.52pm on Friday, Mach 5.

He appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, after police claimed he couldn't see out of the windows of the car.

The charges baffled magistrate Virginia Sturgess who described it as "quite an unusual charge".

Even police prosecutor sergeant Jo Colston said she had "never seen a mud-covered car come under due care before".

When pulled over Axford told police he had been bogged on a muddy road before admitting he had been "having fun" there.

Ms Sturgess told Axford: "It seems like a fairly silly thing to do".

She fined him $100 and he lost three points on his driver's licence.

RACQ technical researcher John Ewing said while the incident was unusual if the driver couldn't see out of the windows it was unsafe to drive.

"I don't know the specifics of this case, but in the end it's at the discretion of the police officer," Mr Ewing said.

"I'd imagine the car would have to be incredibly muddy for them to say it was unsafe to drive."
