Man arrested over gun theft and fire

POLICE have arrested a 26 year old Lismore man who they allege caused $250,000 worth of fire damage after breaking into a business in Habib Drive and stealing a .22 rifle and ammunition.

Richmond Local Area Command Sergeant Andrew Lawrence said police arrested the man after searching his caravan, at a park in South Lismore on the Bruxner Highway, where they seized a rifle and some ammunition.

Police said that the break-in occurred on Monday about 5am. After stealing a number of items, including the firearm, the thief then set fire to the building before fleeing.

Police from Richmond Local Area Command and Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the fire.

A crime scene was established and examined by forensic specialists.

Investigations are continuing and police are urging anyone with information to contact Lismore Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information you provide will be treated in confidence.
