Man arrested at airport over weapons

A MAN allegedly linked to a military-grade weapons syndicate was arrested at Sydney's International Airport on Tuesday morning moments before he was due to board a flight to Lebanon.

Detectives from the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad stopped the 39-year-old from leaving the country about 5am following an investigation to the discovery of a weapons cache at a western suburbs smash repair business in June.

During last month's raid, police allegedly found a .22 calibre machine pistol with a silencer, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and ammunition.

As the man was taken to the Botany Police Station on Tuesday morning, police allegedly found a high-powered assault rifle, capable of firing grenades, drugs, ammunition and about $20,000 in cash in linked raids.

The man was charged with a string of firearms offences and refused bail.

Police are investigating if the weapons are connected to those seized earlier this year during an operation targeting the supply of military-grade weapons to the organised crime network.
