A MACKAY father and daughter who are contestants on hit television show The Biggest Loser hope their experience will inspire other Mackay residents to get healthy.
Sam and Jess O'Malley won a spot on the popular television show, which will start on Sunday, March 17.
They hope their stint on The Biggest Loser will make Mackay a healthier place.
"We're hoping to reach the greater community and start something," Sam, 42, said. "Get a bit of a health kick going in Mackay.
"We're lucky. We've had the ability to be trained by different aspects of the fitness world.
"We're taken a lot away from what we've been doing. There's no such word as 'can't' or 'I'm sore' or 'I'm too fat'."
Jess, 21 told the Daily Mercury she signed herself up for the show because she wanted a change.
"I tried a few different diets and I kind of never really stuck to them. I figured if I applied and got successful, I would have to stick with it.
"I needed someone there to understand what it was like and to push me to my limits so I had no opportunity to back out."
While she was at it, she signed her dad up too, before she broke the news to him.
"I filled out mine (application) before I even asked him," she said.
She told her father she'd signed herself up and he was fully supportive. Then she told him the full story that he had to go too.
"Lucky he said he was going to support me," Jess said.
However, he's glad she did.
"Up until we went into the house, I didn't have much concern with my life," Sam said.
"I didn't think I was as overweight as I turned out to be. I thought I just had a bit of a gut."
They said their friends, family and Mackay community had backed them 100%.
"You don't realise the support you have until something like this comes up," Sam said.
Jess now wants to become a personal trainer who will give clients a more personal experience.
