Lyon: Distressed Demons need May-day call

MELBOURNE must make a play for uncontracted Gold Coast co-captain Steven May in order to halt its problem with opposition key forwards, according to Demons great Garry Lyon.

Kangaroos youngster Ben Brown was the latest forward to have his way with a young Demons defence on Sunday afternoon, kicking five goals in the side's 14-point win at the MCG.

It follows a familiar pattern for Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin, who has seen a number of key forwards dominate his defensive unit throughout the first nine weeks of the season.

Nick Riewoldt (four goals), Tom Hawkins (five), Jack Riewoldt (six), Jarryd Roughead (four) and now Brown (five) have all had starring performances against the Demons this year.

Such a significant weakness within the side has led to Lyon suggesting his former team should target May come trade time, with the 25-year-old out of contract at the Suns at season's end.

"I'd ring my old mate Todd Viney - who is in the list management team - and tell him (to go) all guns blazing for Steven May," Lyon told SEN.

"We know that he's out of contract. They just need a big key defender.

"Oscar McDonald keeps getting exposed - he's not the match-up for Ben Brown.

"Tom McDonald really struggled and Sam Frost is going to be okay, but he's more of your running, rebounding 6ft 5in defender.

"All guns blazing for Steven May. Make the big play - lock him in."

May, who was made Gold Coast co-captain alongside Tom Lynch at the start of the season, is an inaugural player at the club and has played 94 games for the Suns.

He is out of contract at the end of this season, having not yet extended the three-year deal he penned in 2014.
