Scene Briefs

Luke Vasella plays songs from his new album Great Expectations tonight (Thursday, July 19) at the Beach Hotel, Byron Bay. Songs from the album made the finals of the 2012 Musicoz Awards. Luke also has two songs in the upcoming Rock the Gate movie, to be released in August by CSG Free Northern Rivers. From 8.30pm.

"Atmospheric black metal" is how Katabasis describe their thing. On a massive national tour in support of their self-titled new vinyl album, they descend on the SCU Unibar in Lismore this Friday, July 20. Supported by Red Bee, Hybridize and Jamhog, they promise a night of Serious, Heavy, Metal. Doors open at 7.30pm and $10 gets you in.

The By The River Lounge Bar continues its run of exceptional acts with The Norman & Louise Band. A fresh young seven-piece funk and pop outfit, they're playing this Sunday, July 22, from 3pm. Five dollars gets you a serene afternoon in what hopefully will be glorious winter sunshine.

Christmas in July comes to the Ballina RSL Bowling Club this Saturday, July 21. That doesn't mean relief from the cold. You do get the Headliners Chorus singing as you feast on a traditional Christmas dinner. It also means The Chris Cook Band's bluegrass/hillbilly tunes, led by the irrepressible Chris Cook on banjo, fiddle and guitars. What a way to warm up. Dinner is from 6pm at $28.50 a head.
