Look up not out

A two page spread on the housing shortage in Lismore has so much potential yet falls so short (Echo, In depth, Feb 4).

The sprawl from the CBD out is ugly, unsustainable and will end up our downfall. Has anybody else looked at the CBD itself and thought of the potential for a European style development such as Byron Bay’s CBD?

Byron is not perfect but the slight increase in building height, retail underneath, residential on top for two storeys, bicycle paths everywhere, fewer cars, a thriving night life involving not just pubs, a place people want to live. Brisbane’s picked up on it.

Stop the urban sprawl and be honest, most people cannot and will not be able to own their own little estate now or into the future. By the time you have paid it off in 25 years the modern building materials will have fallen to bits and you may be back to land value.

I want to see Lismore become the most liveable CBD in regional Australia.
