A LONE stand against intolerance and vandalism spoke for many Toowoomba residents disgusted by the apparent arson of the Garden City Mosque.

Liz, who asked that her surname not be published, sat in her wheelchair outside the burnt-out West St mosque in a quiet showing of solidarity - a Christian supporting the Muslim community.

She had brought with her some wood, nails and a hammer.

THE STORY SO FAR

"I thought of making a sign saying something like 'Mosques are churches too and they are important to people', but then I thought, they don't need words, they need building materials," she said.

"I just wanted to say 'here's some wood, rebuild'.

"After all, Jesus was a carpenter.

"Hopefully, other people will now help out too (with building materials)."

Liz, who only recently found Jesus, said she felt for the mosque community.

"Until recently I had tried to be an atheist but I never really believed it," she smiled.

"But everyone has the right to worship in their own way.

"I don't agree with what happened here and I know a lot of people feel the same.

"I don't know why it was burnt down; there's nothing to be achieved by it.

"If they (arsonists) are Christians then I don't agree with their type of Christianity."
