Lismore Garden Club News

Garden Club coach trips are great fun – people who are passionate about gardening and all things horticultural are lovely people and fun to be with. It doesn’t really matter what the destination, the real joy is the actual trip, and the destination is a bonus.

Nita and I went with the Lismore Garden Club to the ABC Gardening Expo recently at the Brisbane Exhibition Centre at South Bank. Our driver for the day was exceptional. Phyllis, Rosemary, Dorothy and Charlie kept us entertained with a raffle, lucky dip, lolly give away and jokes.

Our first stop was for a lovely morning tea at Tugun supplied by the ladies of the Lismore Garden Club. This was a good chance to say g’day to club members and people we had met on previous coach trips and also to meet new people.

We arrived at the Exhibition Centre a bit before 10am. As our tickets had been previously paid for in a group deal we walked straight in. As I have been to the Sydney Gardening Expos a couple of times I have to try to not compare the smaller Brisbane Expo with it. The real blessing was that it wasn’t over-crowded so it was easy to get around. There were several excellent gardening presenters. Now that Peter Cundall has retired Jerry Colby-Williams and Colin Campbell are my favourites. Even though I have been gardening for nearly 50 years I still learned a lot.

There were lots of stands pertaining to gardening, as one would expect, but the plant sellers held the most interest for me. There were lots of very interesting, top quality plants for sale. Many of us, including myself, were able to get a few plants that we simply “couldn’t live without”. We boarded the coach around 3pm and arrived back in Lismore at just on 5pm. A terrific time was had by all.

The Lismore Garden Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Lismore Workers Club. We usually have an interesting speaker. We also have regular gardening related outings. Potential new members most welcome.

Happy gardening, Ron Burns
