Lismore Garden Club News

April is one of the best months of the year for planting most types of plants. However any successful gardener will tell you if you want your plants to thrive there is more to growing plants than simply digging a hole and shoving the plant in.

With annual flowers and vegies it is important to prepare your garden bed about two weeks before planting so that the micro-organisms and earthworms will be doing their magic by the time you plant. Then when you plant your seed or seedlings water them in with Seasol. And after about a week or as they germinate apply half-strength soluble fertiliser such as Aquasol and protect them with snail bait.

When planting trees, fruit trees and vines and shrubs it’s important to make the planting hole a little larger than the plant and backfill with premium potting mix or compost. Premium potting mix includes a soil wetting agent and fertiliser to give them a flying start. Water in with Seasol and mulch. When planting natives use the same procedure but do not use premium potting mix as the fertiliser is not suitable for natives. If planting into lawn it’s important to remove some of the turf and cultivate a small area around the plant.

Finally: “Small plants and seedlings are the babies of the plant world, so treat them as babies.”
