Life-saving technology added to popular ute range

FORD is bringing more firepower to the Australian ute market battle, introducing the latest life-saving safety technology as standard across its range.

After Mitsubishi upped the safety game with the just-released Triton, Ford is introducing autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection. The functionality can automatically stop or dramatically slow the vehicle if the driver fails to act quick enough.

Also added is a function which alerts the driver the ute strays from the lane without indicating, speed traffic sign recognition that provides a constant eye on limits and shows the information in the driver's instrument binnacle, as well as automatic high beam.

That positions the Ranger well above the market-leading Toyota HiLux in safety. Toyota's dual-cab doesn't have auto emergency braking on any model and there are none of the other driver assistance features.

Mercedes-Benz's X-Class and the SsangYongMusso also have AEB as standard across their entire ute range.

The HiLux has been Australia's best-selling vehicle for the past three years, and the trend has continued this year. Last month's national sales saw the HiLux (4431) lead Ranger (3377), while the Triton (3155) was third.

Ford previously only had AEB standard on the Ranger Wildtrak.

Prices have risen from between $350-$600, depending on model.

Safety advocates have been singing the praises of AEB. Data from five European countries and Australia was used in a study four years ago showing a 38 per cent overall reduction in real-world, rear-end crashes for vehicles fitted with low-speed AEB compared to a sample of equivalent vehicles without AEB technology.

"Ranger has a tradition of leading technology, which includes being the first pick-up to achieve a five-star ANCAP safety rating, and in 2018 we added more powertrain choices and significant Driver Assist Technology coupled with a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty,” said Ford Australia and New Zealand president and CEO, Kay Hart.

"Now, AEB with pedestrian detection, lane keeping aid, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam is standard on every Ranger, from the entry-level Ranger XL cab-chassis all the way through to the Ford Performance Ranger Raptor.”

Engine outputs, towing ability and payloads remain unchanged.

Additional safety tech is available as part of a lower cost Tech Pack for the Ranger XLT, and includes Adaptive cruise control and semi-auto active park assist for $800 (previously $1700). Leather upholstery for the Ranger XLT Double Cab is now $1500 (down from $1650).
