Koala art dreaming at Woolies
GOONELLABAH artist Karla Dickens is auctioning the original cartoon of her work Dreaming of a Koala Haven that is currently being installed as an 18m x 6m mural on the wall of the Woolworth's building in Goonellabah.
Karla is one of 22 local artists auctioning work through a website hosted by an artists' collective called the 'Eight Collective', with half of the money raised to be donated to the Friends of the Koala.
The original of Karla's work is 3.2m wide and 1m high.
"The koala's story is not just an Aboriginal story, it is everyone's story," Karla said.
"Living in Goonellabah, I have often noticed the koala crossing signs. I have taken my six-year-old to the Koala Rescue Centre, heard of koala protection in the area, and recently read in the local paper about the interest in making the local koalas a tourist booster. Yet I had not seen any koalas happy in their own habitat. This changed 18 months ago when I saw a koala at a park near my house. This experience automatically gave me a solid and far more real awareness of my furry neighbours," she said.
The online auction will run through August and September, with further details at eight
In conjunction with the art auction, Friends of the Koala are raffling a mixed dozen of Margaret River Watershed Wines, donated by Andrew and Jenni Binns. The winner will be drawn on at the Lismore Art Space at 1 Norris Street on August 1 at 5.30pm. Tickets are available at the Koala Care Centre or by ringing 6629 8388.
