Knock that hangover on the head with these easy cures

IF THE days of festive partying have passed and all you're left with is an I'm-never-drinking-again-hangover; read on.

A hangover is caused by a combination of the toxic by-product of alcohol called acetaldehyde, dehydration and Vitamin A, B and C depletion.

Here are a few things that might ease the pain.

Fried food

The number one thing that comes to most people's minds when they wake up hungover is "how do I get to the nearest fast food restaurant to eat something salty and fried?"

And while fried food is likely to upset your stomach rather than make you feel better, eating fatty foods before drinking has been known to reduce the effects of a hangover.


Eggs have been touted as one of the best things to cure a hangover.

So if you're feeling a bit under the weather, think about cooking up a big breakfast because eggs contain large amounts of cysteine which is known to break down the acetaldehyde in your body.


It seems like a no-brainer, but water is one of the best things you can put in your body when hungover.

Water combats dehydration and helps dilute the leftover alcohol by-products in your stomach.

Adding salt and sugar to your water helps replace the sodium and glycogen lost the night before.

Non-caffeinated, non-carbonated sports drinks like Gatorade can also have the same effect.

Keep drinking

Ever heard of the hair of the dog?

Does drinking the next day really make you feel better?

It turns out it probably doesn't.

In fact, it just numbs the pain of the hangover and increases your risk of becoming alcohol-dependant.

So, maybe give that one a miss.

While this may actually cause you to lose more water making you more dehydrated, the endorphins are likely to make you feel a bit better.
