Kate Leahy wades into top 10 with Cool Water

MUSIC lovers are letting the country know how much they love Kate Leahy, with the Rockhampton singer's song making the top 10 on the 'Airit' Great Southern music chart.

Kate says she was a bit shocked when she first found out.

"It's a really amazing feeling because it means not only do I like my songs, but the radio stations around the country are connecting with it," Kate said.

And she's excited it's her song Cool Water that's made the charts, which is based on the region.

"I lived in Sydney and Europe for years, and when I moved back (to Rockhampton) the weather made an impression on me here," Kate said.

"The first storm season came around and I forgot all about it and how amazing it is when the storm clouds roll in and you get the rain."

Kate's ecstatic to be on the charts and is in good company with singer Matt Corby taking out the number one spot.

"This is the first chart I've ever been in, so that's big, and to be competing with people like Matt Corby and Sarah Blasko was just on it; this isn't just a chart for those independent musicians, it's a chart for everyone in Australia," Kate said.

Along with making the charts, Kate's getting ready for a big year, with a performance at the Agnes Blues and Roots Festival this month as well as organising the Village Festival Road Trip which will make its way around regional Queensland in June.

"I am writing songs at the moment too, I'm not sure when I'll be able to record yet," Kate said.

"There's new music coming out and I'll be throwing (the songs) into our live shows to see what the crowd thinks."

Kate's song Cool Water comes from her EP Bring Home More, which was released last year.
