BARNABY Joyce's job of securing a lower house seat could become a lot easier as of Tuesday when nominations close for Nationals' pre-selection in New England.

It appears the Queensland Senator could be the only pre-selection candidate for the seat currently held by independent Tony Windsor, The Australian was reporting on Monday.

National Farmers' Federation president Jock Laurie, who had loomed as the biggest threat to Mr Joyce's plan, told The Australian he was unlikely to stand.

The Nationals were forced to strip Richard Torbay of his candidacy in New England after he was reported to the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Mr Joyce still has three years to run on his Senate term.
