Thomas Kelly killer has jail term extended

THE JAIL term for the Sydney youth who killed Thomas Kelly in a devastating one punch attack in Kings Cross two years ago had his jail term extended to 10 years today.

An appeal by the New South Wales Director of Public Prosecutions secured the 10-year term for Kieran Loveridge, arguing the previous five-year 10 month sentence was inadequate.

Loveridge attacked teenager Thomas Kelly during a spate of assaults on July 7, 2012 in the notorious inner city district, including four other assaults on the same night.

The NSW Court of Appeal Chief Justice Tom Bathurst on Friday said the previous sentence; handed down in November last year was manifestly inadequate.

Loveridge will now serve a non-parole period of 10 years, with the earliest possible release date in November 2022.

The court also noted the "sudden, violent and unprovoked" nature of the attack, and the role of alcohol and "community disquiet" surrounding alcohol-fuelled violence.
