Investigator rejects Thomson claims

AN INVESTIGATOR with Fair Work Australia who wrote a report detailing alleged rorting in the Health Services Union defended the report in a parliamentary committee on Monday.

The FWA's Terry Nassios's report on his three-year investigation into the HSU exposed a culture of rorting and financial misconduct, implicating former Labor MP Craig Thomson in the scandal.

Mr Nassios yesterday defended his report after Mr Thomson used a parliamentary speech earlier this year in an effort to discredit him.

Under questioning from Liberal Senator Bronwyn Bishop, Mr Nassios yesterday told a parliamentary committee his report was forensic and unbiased, rejecting allegations Mr Thomson previously made under parliamentary privilege.

Asked whether he also stood by findings in the FWA report that Mr Thomson had provided false and misleading information to the FWA, he said "Yes."

While Mr Nassios missed a Senate estimates hearing he was called to due to being on long service leave, he attended the joint parliamentary committee via a phone hook-up.

Mr Thomson has maintained his innocence in the face of Mr Nassios's report, which detailed allegations Mr Thomson, as the then national secretary of the union, had used members' funds on prostitutes among other things.
