FOR this week's blog, let's take a look at the futuristic 2014 BMW i8, which some are saying will be the future of all sports cars.

The i8 is the first sports car of its kind, as it produces the same consumption and emission values of your ordinary compact car. It does this by using hybrid technology.

You may instantly think Toyota Prius, but this car is quite different. The i8 features a front electric motor, a turbocharged 1.5-litre three cylinder engine and an additional electronic motor for added power.

Usually a car with a lithium-ion battery pack has an extremely heavy kerb weight, but BMW decided to use carbon fibre in the construction of the car to keep the weight relatively low.

The entire passenger compartment is made up of a carbon fibre composite material, and in fact, the BMW i range of cars are the first vehicles in a large series production run to have this much carbon fibre throughout the design.

All of this allows the all-wheel drive BMW i8 to launch from 0-100 kilometres per hour, with full electric and engine power, in just 4.4 seconds.

It will keep accelerating until it reaches its electronically limited top speed of 250 kilometres per hour (155 miles per hour).

Amazingly, you can actually drive the BMW i8 around purely in electric mode! Although it limits the top speed to 120 kilometres per hour (75 miles per hour) and you can only get a maximum of 37 kilometres (23 miles) on a full tank of electricity. However, combined with the combustion engine the i8 can achieve a maximum of 600km (373 miles) on a tank.

Some other features that this BMW is equipped with includes a 50:50 axle load distribution, emergency braking assist and preparation, both post and pre-collision safety systems, LED headlights along with daytime running lights, a leather interior, a six-speed automatic transmission, and much more!

The new 2014 BMW i8 starts from $299,000 AUD plus on-road costs.
