Injured Rabbitoh faces long stint on the sidelines

PROMISING Rabbitohs five-eighth Luke Keary will be sidelined for the next four to five months after undergoing surgery on a ruptured pectoral muscle.

Keary sustained the injury against Penrith in the Auckland Nines tournament and was rushed straight back to Sydney.

The news is a big blow to Souths - the club had planned on moving last season's pivot, John Sutton, to the forward pack, and partnering Keary with Adam Reynolds in the halves.

"He got caught in an awkward position," Rabbitohs high performance manager Troy Thomson said.

"He went in and got some surgery done which was our best-case scenario and that repair was successful."

Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire has the option of returning Sutton to five-eighth, given his combination with Reynolds was largely successful last year.

But young gun Dylan Walker has also been used there during the pre-season.
