Injured Kyrgios spotted playing basketball in Canberra

TOP-RANKED Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been spotted playing social basketball in Canberra days after skipping the Atlanta Open, citing injury.

Last week Kyrgios announced he would not be attempting to defend his 2016 victory in Atlanta, due to a persistent hip injury.

"Having to make the decision not to defend my title at the BB&T Atlanta Open was really tough and disappointing,” Kyrgios said in a statement.

"We were very hopeful up to the last moment that my hip could respond and allow me to compete at the highest level, but unfortunately it's just not ready. I hope all of the fans in Atlanta know that I wish I could have returned to win again, and hopefully I will be able to do so in the future.”

Kyrgios has been completing his rehabilitation on the niggling injury in his hometown in Canberra, but the world no.21 raised eyebrows when he was photographed playing in a local mixed basketball competition on Tuesday night (AEST).

The still images taken by an ACT-based ABC cameraman and shared on Twitter don't show Kyrgios going all out dunking or breaking ankles, and it's unknown exactly how intense social basketball comps in Belconnen can get, but Kyrgios has never hidden his love for basketball, the sport he has repeatedly claimed to enjoy more than tennis.
