Incredible McDermott knock helps Canes to thrilling win

HOBART Hurricanes batsman Ben McDermott has narrowly missed out on creating history, falling just short of the highest individual innings in the Big Bash.

McDermott's 114 fell three runs shy of the 117 scored by Englishman Luke Wright in the first season of the competition.

The stunning display of power hitting included nine sixes and eight fours.

He reached the total from just 54 balls.

McDermott dazzled the Melbourne crowd, racing from 50 to his century in 16 deliveries.

McDermott's innings comes in just his second Big Bash match, after the Hurricanes opted to included the youngster at the expense of Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara.

McDermott's innings eventually ended after falling lbw to Renegades spinner Sunil Narine.

The youngster said post-innings he wasn't aware of his impending record, with his focus instead on getting the result for the Hurricanes.

"I'm feeling pretty good. Very tired obviously,” McDermott said.

"I was just thinking about getting the job done. Obviously really nice to get it up, but as I said before, I really was hoping we'd get this done.”

McDermott may have missed his place in history, but it was a night full of records.

Earlier in the evening, the Melbourne Renegades set a new record of their own, scoring the highest total in Big Bash history - 4-222.

The record lasted just 90 minutes, as the Hurricanes, courtesy of McDermott's amazing display, passed the new mark.

It came down to the final ball, as Hurricanes import Stuart Broad hit the winning runs.

Broad may have ensured victory, but post-match, he was full of praise for the true match-winner McDermott.

"That's one of the best Twenty20 innings I've ever seen,” Broad said.

"How clean he struck it over the boundary, what was he - 28 off 20, shows you've still got time in T20 to get yourself in and then he just exploded.

"No real dots. Wonderful innings from such a young man. It's great to see the talent over here.”

Renegades import Sunil Narine won't snare the headlines after McDermott's heroics, but he almost pulled off victory for the Melbourne side.

The West Indian spinner was sensational for the Renegades, taking 3-27. Narine also provided a magical run-out in the final over that looked to have ended the hopes of the Tasmanian side.

Both sides came into the contest needing victory to keep their Big Bash finals hopes alive, however, it would be the Hurricanes who survived after an amazing game.
