HUGH Jackman has taken to Instagram after a mark on his nose was diagnosed as a form of cancer known as basal cell carcinoma.

The actor had the mark checked after being tipped off by his wife, actor Deborra-Lee Furness.

"Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right! I had a basil (sic) cell carcinoma. Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!

Fans around the world used the opportunity to offer support and amplify the visibility Jackman added to skin cancer awareness.

"As someone who was diagnosed with stage 3 malignant melanoma at age 23, THANK YOU for speaking out about this and sharing your experience. Best wishes to you! #sunsafety", posted a fan using the handle 'chels_e_31'

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer that, while malignant, rarely metastasizes or kills.
