Hydration the key to beating New Year hangover blues
NOT that we condone heavy drinking on New Year's Eve, but we suspect there may be a few sore heads come Wednesday morning.
With the revelry set to ramp up on Tuesday night and into the wee hours of the morning, attention is not all that likely to be focused on the dreaded morning after, when innocuous sounds become booming symphonies and gentle beams of sunlight become blinding shards of pain.
Queensland Health's senior director of preventive health Kaye Pulsford said recently that excessive drinking put the body to the test like little else.
"Alcohol is also a diuretic, with the kidneys sending fluid straight to the bladder, explaining the constant need to urinate but also why people experience hangovers," she said.
"The liver needs water to remove toxins from the body…the liver then draws on the water supply from other organs, including the brain, which explains the bad head-ache the next day."
All of which means staying hydrated with water is one of the better ways to go about avoiding a hangover.
However, there is no shortage of people with their own opinions.
Bojangles manager Aodhan McCann says hair of the dog is the way to go.
"I've heard them all really, but I find that nothing really works better than backing up," Mr McCann said.
Meanwhile, manager of the new BWS, Aaron Shaw, says fried food is the way to go.
"I've heard greasy KFC in the morning, when they've just finished frying it," Mr Shaw said.
Meanwhile, manager of Dicey's, Dave Giacomin, also says a greasy breakfast takes the edge off, but said preparation the night before was crucial.
"I find looking after yourself the night before with Panadol and a greasy breakfast the next day is the way to go," Mr Giacomin said.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, all three said hair of the dog was another tried and tested method for beating the hangover blues.
"I've found that if your body is used to drinking alcohol, they're (hangovers) not so bad," Mr McCann said.

Peter Reilly: In a blender put 1 can tuna, 1 mango, 1/2 cup tomato sauce, 3 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 pinches of salt, 4 small red chillies, 300ml thick crème and 1 sliced onion. Drink all in one go ... trust me it works!
Jessica Rossow: Two Panadol and a glass of water before I go to sleep, no matter how drunk or tired I am. Works every time.
Kelly Barb: Drink plenty of water before during and afterwards. My hubby goes to bed with a two litre bottle of water.
