Hostage claims captors told him to 'paddle for his life'

AUSTRALIAN hostage Warren Rodwell told Filipino police he was put in a boat and told to paddle for his life by his captors.

The ABC reported on Sunday Mr Rodwell was released after begin held for 15 months by a militant Islamic group in the Philippines.

Various media outlets have reported more than $90,000 was paid to his captors to secure his release, but no authorities have yet confirmed any ransom was paid.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr said on Saturday the government refused to pay the $2 million ransom Mr Rodwell's captors demanded.
