DALBY boxer Damien Hooper has advanced to the Round of 16 in London overnight after a furious finish to his opening light heavyweight bout against American Marcus Browne.

The 20-year-old was surprisingly conservative early - and trailed 6-5 after two rounds - before exploding with a flurry of precision punching and heavy blows in the last to claim a 13-11 victory.

"I felt awesome. He was a good opponent as well. He wasn't gonna let me just walk over him," Hooper said.

"I could see it in his eyes and body language that he didn't want to be there.

"In the final round I was down a point and was a bit desperate."

But his Olympic debut was not without controversy after Hooper wore a T-shirt featuring the Aboriginal flag on his way to the ring.

The Olympic charter bans demonstrations or political, religious or racial propaganda any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.

An AOC spokesperson said Hooper has apologised and will not be wearing the flag shirt again in London.

Laying down and de-constructing the mandala structure symbolises the impermanence of the menstrual cycle and an end to female inequality in the world.
