Homeless shelter gives hope for lismore

It finally looks like the long-awaited Lismore Homeless Shelter has found a home and it's not a moment too soon.

For a city the size of Lismore to have people sleeping on the streets is unacceptable.

People become homeless for all sorts of reasons but no-one sleeps rough as their first choice.

People who are down on their luck deserve our compassion and help, not our scorn or condescension.

Call me a bleeding heart if you wish (certainly wouldn't be the first time and it's certainly not even close to the worst insult I've ever had tossed in my direction) but it's how we treat the most disadvantaged in our society that truly shows who we are.

It's heartening that we have a Council which recognises the responsibility we have as a community to those less fortunate than most - and who have also realised that the earlier the community is involved in a consultative process, the less problems there will be further down the track.

People don't like decisions being imposed upon them, they like to be involved - and that's a fair enough ask, no matter the situation.
