FEWER people died on Australian roads during the 2012-13 official holiday road toll period than last year, with 48 fatal crashes in the past week around the nation.

Of the total number of fatalities, 15 people died in New South Wales and five people died on Queensland roads.

In other states, the national holiday road toll reached nine in Victoria, eight in Western Australia, seven in South Australia, three in Tasmania and one in the Northern Territory and none in the Australian Capital Territory.

There was also a triple fatality in the NT just hours before the official holiday road toll period started last Friday, which was not included in the official count.
