Help name police puppies

NSW Police

THE pitter patter of paws is being heard in NSW Police ranks and detectives from the state's Dog Squad need the public's help to name the latest litter of four-legged recruits.

Last month, star English springer spaniel detector dog Bronte gave birth to eight puppies at Menai's dog unit.

Sadly, one died. But the surviving seven pups - three females and four males - have now been welcomed into the NSW Police Force and will stay with their mum until they are about 12 weeks of age before being placed with official "puppy raisers".

Today Police Dog Unit Commander Superintendent Mick Goodwin launched an online Puppy Poll to give the community the chance to name the furry crime fighters.

He said the pups had "all the genes" to make good drug, explosive and cadaver detection dogs.

As the puppies are part of the "A" program, all names need to begin with A and cannot be more than two syllables.

The Puppy Poll will last for three weeks when the votes will be counted and the names of the dogs announced.

Pictures of the puppies and more information on how to vote can be found on the NSW Police Dog Unit facebook page

The pup's day-to-day progress can also be tracked online with "Puppy Cam" streaming live on the NSW Police website.

Names already taken by other police dogs: Astro, Ace, Amber, Archie, Abbey, Angel, Aussie, Ally, Alexi, Ajay, Akuna, Anzac, Amy, Angus, Apple, April, Aqua, Artie, Aster, Astrid, Atlas, Aura, Axel.
