Hearing Voices singing

Page MP Janelle Saffin is hearing voices – again.

For the second year in a row the Hearing Voices choir brought the Christmas spirit of song to the front of her Lismore office. Ms Saffin joined the choir on Molesworth Street to sing some of their Christmas carol favourites like Jingle Bells.

“When we are rushing around town, it’s good to hear singing,” Ms Saffin said. “It’s Christmas time. It makes it feel more Christmassy to hear carols.”

Choir member Helen Coyle said that she walked past the choir singing outside Ms Saffin’s last year and she was invited to join in.

“I feel like I’ve come full circle,” Helen said. “I joined the choir that day and now I’m here singing again a year later.”

Helen said that joining the choir allowed her to express herself and make new friends.

“I love singing. I love the freedom it brings; it’s healing and nourishes the spirit,” she said.

The Hearing Voices choir is a choir for people with a mental illness, their family and carers.
