TWO essential handbooks for freshwater and saltwater fishing in NSW are now available for fishers flocking to the water in 2012.
NSW Department of Primary Industries recreational fisheries manager, Phil Bolton, said the NSW Recreational Fishing Guides were produced using funds allocated from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust.
"The guides provide recreational fishers with an up-to-date summary of the state's fishing rules and regulations and are a must-have item for the tackle boxes of anyone fishing in NSW waters," Mr Bolton said.
"Two separate guides are produced every year, the NSW Recreational Saltwater Fishing Guide and the NSW Recreational Freshwater Fishing Guide.
"The guides provide recreational fishers with comprehensive information about how they can play their role in taking care of our aquatic environment including information on any new and existing fishing regulations, as well as helpful fishing facts.
"Information in the free guides includes bag and size limits, information on individual species, useful knots, fishing closures, as well as information on threatened and protected species and catch and release best practice.
"They also explain how fish licence fees are invested back into fishing through the Recreational Fishing Trusts of NSW which fund various projects such as the provision of fishing facilities at popular fishing spots, fish aggregating devices, artificial reefs, Fishcare volunteers, the rehabilitation of fish habitat and fish restocking programs across the state."
Mr Bolton said fishing was one of Australia's favourite recreational activities with more than one million recreational fishers hitting the water in NSW every year.
"Responsible fishing will ensure the health and sustainability of our precious aquatic habitats," Mr Bolton said.
"The state-wide distribution of these free annual guides demonstrates the NSW Government's commitment to improving the fishing experience for anglers across NSW, while safeguarding our fishing resources for our future generations."
Copies of the NSW Recreational Saltwater Fishing Guide 2012 and the NSW Recreational Freshwater Fishing Guide 2012 are available from NSW DPI Fisheries Offices and most fishing tackle shops.
