Haber and his merc set to return to circuit after big crash

MOTORSPORT: Mackay's Morgan Haber will climb back into his Erebus Motorsport Mercedes Benz race car for the first time competitively since his big crash in February.

He will race in the Australian GT Series in Townsville this weekend and met with fans and sponsors in Mackay yesterday.

The 21-year-old said he was looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of his race car.

"I thought I'd be nervous and wasn't sure how I'd go but the test day (earlier in the week) went quite well," Haber said.

"Townsville is essentially my home race, so it's good to be back here in Mackay, show off the car and then head to Townsville."

The street circuit was a drivers' favourite, Haber said.

"We have two, one-hour races, about 43 laps with practice and qualifying sessions," he said.

"It's a good track, I've only been there in the V8 but this year I'm in the GT car so it's going to be different."

Haber said he would have to be more wary of the curbs in the GT as opposed to the V8.

The lay off from racing has meant Haber missed two races but is eyeing off a strong series finish.

"At best we can finish third but top five is something we'd be really proud of and quite a good achievement," he said.

Haber's long-term goals included a future in the V8 Supercars but said he was entertaining a future with his current team.

Currently, he is his final year of engineering at QUT.

"It (study) has been busy but I'm keen for it to be over so I can start a job and get some money," Haber said. "But it's good to be home."
