IN THIS day and age you can pretty much do anything on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis.

You can do the grocery shopping online, pay a bill and now you can get fit and healthy with more 24-hour gyms opening throughout the Mackay region.

City Fitness Health Club is about to open a second gym at Mt Pleasant that will operate on a 24-hour basis.

It will join three others which are already operating in the region - City Fitness' 24-hour section, Snap Fitness in Mackay and the Northern Beaches and Evoke Fitness.

Gym owner Steve Eden said the gym had a 24-hour area in the main gym, which had been operating for about 18 months.

Based on its success and the number of residents wanting to exercise outside usual gym hours, the new gym will open in mid to late March.

"It's all about providing convenience and the opportunity for people to exercise," Mr Eden said.

"In the main club we have a lot of people who utilise the early time more - the busy time is 4.30am, 5.30am (until) 7am.

"People like to get their workout in before going to work.

"We have a lot of members who use the 24-hour facility who live on that side of town.

"People live very busy lifestyles and fitting things into 9am to 5pm is gone.

"We do it seven days a week.

"We have seven-day trading, (people who do) four-on, four-off rosters and 12-hour shifts.

"Everyone's different, some are morning people and others are more night people.

"If they work late they can go down (to the gym) after tea.

"The percentage who would use after hours for the main club (8am-8pm) would approximately be only about 2%," Mr Eden said.

"I expect the Mt Pleasant gym will have a higher percentage because it's right there and you've got residency within walking distance."

  • Lifestyle - being a shift worker or working odd hours won't stop you from getting fit.
  • Financially - Get the most out of your membership, rather than paying casual fees.
  • Raining outside - you can exercise indoors at any time, not matter the weather forecast.


  • Unsupervised - staff don't man the facility during late nights and early mornings, but surveillance and security are provided. However, members are also trained to use the equipment when they join.
  • Don't have time - unfortunately, that is no longer a valid excuse.
