Gowns, roses and desperation: The Bachelor is back

THE Bachelor is the height of trashy reality TV.

Like a train wreck, it's hard to watch but you also can't look away.

Sam Wood made a good first impression on viewers in his debut as The Bachelor.

The fitness company owner capably navigated the challenges of the reality dating show's first episode.

In contrast to last year's "love rat" Blake Garvey, Sam showed a sense of humour and even a vulnerability, revealing he spent his high school years as an awkward, lanky teen with braces.

In last night's season three premiere, Sam met 19 glammed-up women and then spent time getting to know them at a cocktail party.

Several women tried to make their marks, presenting the 34-year-old with everything from beer to a balloon rose to a polaroid selfie.

There were also plenty of cringe-worthy moments, including British vet Laura's awkward mention of one of the more repulsive aspects of her job (treating dogs' anal glands).

"If I could go back and rewind things I probably wouldn't have done it," she said.

As the night wore on, the women became more and more desperate to get Sam's attention.

Tessa went so far as to change out of her dress and into casual clothes to stand out from the crowd.

It was aspiring filmmaker Heather, though, who received the coveted white rose, which allows her to ask Sam on a date at any time during the show.

"I feel like she's someone I've known for a while already," he said.

The pair bonded over their shared love of superheroes and Heather's sarcastic sense of humour.

"You're so unattractive; you're aware of it right? That you're hideous?" she joked.

But physical education teacher Sandra arguably stole the spotlight from both women and even The Bachelor when her loud and energetic personality gave way to gossiping as she mingled with the other women.

Brisbane accounts manager Reshael bore the brunt of Sandra's manic behaviour after refusing to speak negatively about the other women.

Unaware of this, Sam decided to keep Sandra on with Gold Coast women Jessica and Zilda going home.
