Man with 'explosives' surrenders after 10-hour police siege

Updated report 4.12pm: A MAN who had claimed his car was packed with explosives in the Gold Coast hinterland has surrendered to police.

A police spokeswoman said the man surrendered to police about 3.15pm and was now in custody

Initial report, 7.28am: A MAN who claims to have explosives in his car has held police at bay  for eight hours in a tense siege on the Gold Coast.

The drama began at 5.15 this morning in the hinterland town of  Canungra.

Most of the town has been evacuated as the drama continues.

The man draped towels and other items around the windows of his maroon Holden Commodore.

News Ltd reported that at one point he left he came out of the vehicle and started smashing it with a wooden pole.

A police spokesperson said the negotiations were continuing.
