GetUp Ballina Byron Inaugural Meeting

Ballina and Byron voters have decided to find out which issues matter most to people in our local area by hosting grass roots political GetTogethers last Thursday.

The GetTogethers, which have the backing of advocacy group GetUp, were designed to encourage locals to come together and discuss the issues they think are important in the lead up to the federal election later this year.

We discussed the vision that we had for Australia. A vision of a country that was environmentally sustainable, compassionate and just.

Geoff Bensley said the GetTogethers served as a reminder that there was a lot at stake at the next election.

We believe that we need to take responsibility for the course our country is taking and play our part in promoting social equality and environmental sustainability.

More than 400 GetTogethers were held around the country in every state and territory last Thursday night.

The GetTogethers were not about supporting one political party or another. They were about hearing the concerns of voters and working out which issues they felt needed the most attention.

Many issues were raised at the meeting from the CSG to the Gonski Review and offshore processing to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

GetUp National Director Sam McLean said the Get Togethers were designed to start a national conversation.

"We feel it is incredibly important that people engage in the political process," Mr McLean said. "We don't mind what they say. We encourage debate. We encourage people to express their views. Ultimately, the most important thing is that people realise they have a voice."

If you are a compassionate person with a commitment to Social Equality and the Environment come and join the debate at our next GetUp meeting at Byron Bay Services Club on Thursday 4th April from 6.30 to 8.30pm.
