THE LNP is calling for the state government to consider moving to electronic patients' records to help ensure the correct dispensing of medications.

But the state government has already taken steps in that direction with a trial site in Far North Queensland already recently announced.

The government also earlier this year announced an eHealth Investment Strategy which included a 20-year vision for ICT health investment.

The call for action came after LNP health spokesman Mark McArdle visited St Stephen's Hospital in Hervey Bay to view the electronic medical records system already in place at the private hospital.

A spokeswoman for Health Minister Cameron Dick said the minister had previously toured the facility to view the digital health system when he was in Hervey Bay last month.

But, Mr McArdle still pressed ahead with the calls.

"Now, if this works it will be a great boon to all patients in Hervey Bay, also right throughout the state," Mr McArdle said.

"One of the big issues regarding hospitals is the dispensing of medication.

"There are major negative outcomes of taking the wrong medications given, under or over medications or the wrong times."

Mr McArdle admitted that before the digital records could be rolled out a trial should be conducted and suggested the Princess Alexandra in Brisbane as one of the possible sites.

The state government is already considering this option and a trial is expected to be set up at the hospital in the by the end of the year.

The Health Minister's spokeswoman said the government would be progressively moving digital health across the state.

"One primary category of the eHealth strategy includes the digital future of Queensland Health," she said.

"We are well on the way to launching Queensland's first digital hospital in the public sector later this year when Princess Alexandra Hospital comes online."
