TAKING the next step in your career doesn't have to mean changing jobs.

Changing employers might not even be an option, depending on what you do. Even if it is, if you enjoy your current role why would you want to give it away?

Adding to your skills set through training or earning additional qualifications not only makes you a more capable employee, it highlights your initiative, commitment and desire to further yourself, all of which are traits any employer will value, and hopefully reward.

If you're thinking about upskilling, it's important to take the time to find the right course or qualification - one that relates directly to your job, but is also something you're interested in so you'll make time in your schedule to study.

While it shouldn't be the deciding factor, a training course that relates directly to your main employment may also be a deductible expense come tax time.

Further, if the course relates directly to your job, and your employer can see the benefit of you undertaking the training, in many cases the company will pay for the costs of the course - professional development means a business ends up with more highly skilled employees, and the investment in the training will pay for itself many times over in terms of increased productivity.

Universities, TAFEs and registered training organisations all offer a range of short courses perfect for upskilling - many are offered online or after-hours, making balancing training with work a bit easier.

Make sure the organisation offering the course is reputable - you don't want to end up with a qualification worth no more than the paper it's written on.

The latest employment trends report from recruitment experts Hudson found recruitment cautiousness had increased to its highest levels since 2009.

According to the report, employers intend to maintain current staffing levels. If they don't want to bring on new staff, the existing employees need to be prepared to step up to new challenges and responsibilities, making it a great time to consider doing an upskilling course - adding to your skill set means the company doesn't need to look at hiring new talent.

The report found almost half of Australian employers ran programs aimed at retaining talent and building employee capability and engagement.
