German backpacker found dead

The body of a 24-year-old German tourist has been retrieved from Bald Rock in the Boonoo Boonoo National Park, 45 kilometres west of Tenterfield.

The man was reported missing on Monday afternoon after bushwalking with friends and the rescue helicopter was called in to assist with the search.

A body was found at 11.40am on Tuesday morning, but because of high winds the helicopter was not able to be used in the retrieval. Specialist SES crews and Queensland ambulance paramedics retrieved the body from what was described as a 'remote' location.

A crime scene has been established and a post-mortem is being conducted to determine how the man died. As with all sudden and unexplained deaths, a report on the circumstances leading up to his death is being prepared for the Coroner.
