Genie on stage in Ballina
The musical Aladdin Junior, which opens this Friday, January 15, at Ballina Players Theatre in Swift St, Ballina, has as its villain the evil vizier, Jafar (Dylan Wheeler). He plots and schemes to overthrow the Sultan (Simon Dubber) and to marry his daughter, the beautiful Princess Jasmine (Sasha Giles). Good kid’s stuff.
This is the fifth holiday show this January by this hard-working theatre company.
The show has a cast of 47 young actors aged 10 to 18, with others working behind the scenes. Young people come from all over the region to participate in these holiday shows. The shows provide a valuable training ground in music and drama. Many young actors have progressed to other Ballina Players productions.
Aladdin Junior is an adaptation of the classic 1992 Disney animated film Aladdin, which had as its source an Arabian Nights story. Aladdin (Lachlan Copeland) is a nobody who with the help of a genie seeks fame and fortune. On his journey he makes an important discovery about himself. (Don’t rub a genie the wrong way.)
Aladdin Junior is directed by Mike Sheehan and will be staged this Friday to Sunday, January 15-17; and next Wednesday to Sunday, January 20-24.
Tickets are $16/12 and the show starts at 7.30pm.
